YOUTH PREVENTION + RECOVERY CARE
A new, standalone, ten bed, residential facility, with single bedroom shared accommodation plus support areas, on a ‘greenfield’ site close to the Bendigo CBD, for the treatment and care of teenagers and young adults, with a moderate mental illness, in a safe and secure environment. Designed to sit within its residential context, the ‘house’ is broken into a number of elements to reduce its scale and mass, to be like ‘a series of houses’. ‘Outbuildings’ have been designed as if they were ‘garden sheds’ on a typical suburban block. Working with the User Groups, we have avoided handrails to ramps, signage, and other ‘government’ signals. Equally, the interiors have been designed to be youth centric and robust, breaking all tradition with stereotypes of mental health, health or institution. The first of three projects in the first roll-out of YPARCS facilities for the state, this is the only one to meet the brief, delivered within time and budget setting the benchmark’ for future PARCS facilities.
