DANDENONG MDC FOR VICTORIA POLICE
This exciting new facility for Victoria Police brings together, for the first time, allied agencies delivering focused services for victims of sexual crime. The brief called for a contemporary design solution, encouraging increased reporting and a space that supports comfort. For staff, the environment was to be focused on a team approach for these groups which currently operate in isolation in separate facilities.
An important aspect of the approach was to develop a new way of working while servicing visitor needs and expectations. The intent was to make the client services much more accessible and approachable with all counselling and visitor meeting facilities co-located on the ground floor.
Whilst still being respectful of procedural requirements, all staff areas are co-located on the upper levels with large shared spaces being included to encourage staff interactions. By law some of the agencies required separation, and therefore, these shared facilities are designed to be dynamic and interactive spaces.
A major feature of the design is the use of colour and texture to generate interest and develop spaces with a more ‘domestic’ feel. The ‘growth rings’ used in timber and glazing film elements are symbolic of both Dandenong’s location in the foothills and also the notion of personal strength.
