DANDENONG HOSPITAL MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES
Warm timber cladding and framing has been used throughout in a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional craft methods such as tongue and groove, board and batten, open slats and shiplap. All bedrooms are single ensuites with external views and secure internal courtyards accessible 24 hours a day. Each courtyard has been carefully landscaped and designed to cater for a range of patient activities. The surrounding glazed corridors permit unobtrusive observation of patients by staff, and have window seats and windows which can be folded back to allow patient enjoyment of external spaces from the comfort of internal areas. Each wing has a high security section and dedicated discrete area for highly disturbed admissions. The administration, research and training building serves as the principal entry and accommodates a range of allied mental health professions as well as providing facilities for ongoing research and training. ESD elements include underground rainwater storage tanks to provide cistern flushing and garden watering, and recycled materials which are used throughout for internal finishes. This is a joint venture project with Bates Smart.
