China Woodcarving Culture Expo City
Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, China
The China Woodcarving Culture Expo City is a proposed urban precinct within Dongyang located on a 60ha site with access to the riverfront. Dongyang is a city with a well-established woodcarving industry with a reputation for craftsmanship. The international design competition called for a new mixed use precinct intended to showcase traditional Chinese arts and crafts, which would function as a centre for woodcarving-related commerce, culture, training, research and exhibition.
GroupGSA’s competition-winning masterplan was designed to deliver an experiential journey of woodcarving craftsmanship and culture. The precinct functions as a node along the flow of goods, ideas, creativity, capital, people and information; as well as an interface between the traditional and the modern.
The masterplan establishes a unique spatial experience of woodcarving culture through landscape and architecture. A new urban form is carved out of the site to create a precinct that becomes an open-air museum of woodcarving craftsmanship, culture and history. ESD principles underpinned the masterplan.
