BELGRADE AVENUE PRE SCHOOL
This project added to and improved the Belgrade Avenue Pre-School, Maternal and Child Health and general community facilities. The design merged the separate Neighbourhood and Pre-School buildings into one integrated facility, while addressing functional limitations within the existing buildings.
Play and activity is central to the learning and development of preschool age children. These activities cover a wide range of states, from quiet individual pursuits (eg. reading) to dynamic individual and group activities (eg. ball games). Our design contention is that these various modes of activity should be allowed to take place in a variety of locations, unconstrained to being ‘indoors’ or ‘outdoors’.
The main Pre-School room and outdoor learning areas were conceived as a ‘Garden Room’, a notionally seamless space with a variety of zones to support different activities. This opens to the outside with wide verandahs and decks, forming ‘outdoor room’ areas. The transition is playful, informal and engaging.
