ASHBURTON LIBRARY + COMMUNITY CENTRE
This project is a rejuvenation of an original Daryl Jackson library, much valued by the local community, and new accommodation for the Ashburton Community Centre.
The library has been respectfully reconfigured and enlarged to provide a larger children’s area and to allow for new and emerging technologies. A shared entrance opens onto a lounge meeting space with abundant natural light, and library and community centre now form a single building. External treatments also respect the original design, and existing native landscape has been enhanced and expanded.
Sustainability was a fundamental part of the brief, and ESD has been addressed through the use of materials, including sandwich panel roofing and walling, LED lighting throughout, night-purge ventilation and rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and irrigation.
